Testimony 1

“For guys I would say that there is no place, no neighbourhood that I would not walk around in late at night. Girls may not feel as comfortable, so like you would anywhere else, use caution.”

“I always felt safe no matter where in the city I was. However, I recommend that people avoid the parks at night, especially females. Nothing happened to anyone that I know, but I did hear some stories about things that go on in these areas after sunset.”

“I lived in the center of the city, which is home to many tourist attractions and stores, so this part was especially dangerous for getting pick-pocketed. Getting your purse or wallet stolen can and does happen in every neighbourhood though so always keep an eye on and hold on tight to your belongings. NEVER carry your passport, lots of cash or all of your credit cards with you. BE SURE to have all the numbers you need to cancel credit cards and make a list of phone numbers in case your cell phone gets stolen. You will hear many stories of people getting their purse or wallet stolen, including Spaniards, so just be careful and minimize your losses by not carrying all your valuables with you at once. Although Madrid feels quite safe for a big city and there are always people around. Trust your instincts, stay with a group and never be afraid to take a taxi directly to your front door if it is late at night.”

“I felt very safe while in Madrid but it is a huge city and there are many instances of tourists being targets for pickpockets. Use common sense and trouble can normally be avoided. Don’t go home alone late at night (take a taxi or walk with a friend that lives nearby). Stay on the main streets, etc. Also, have photocopies of important information and don’t carry lots of excess cash.”

“I don’t want to scare anyone, but as in any big city you really have to be careful. My purse was stolen twice and there were two other attempts, all in different neighbourhoods. I’m not an exception; most people I know have their own story. You’re an easy target if you’re walking around with a camera or talking loudly in English. These people are professionals and they’re so good that you may not even notice when it’s happening. Some even dress up in suits so that they don’t look suspicious and others work in teams.”

Testimony 6

“I was in an Irish bar watching the Real Madrid and Munich game with a bunch of people. I had my wallet with me the entire night, but when I stood up to put my coat on and put it down on the table for a second (my back was turned) it was gone. It was right after the game and everyone was getting up to leave (it was a packed bar), so I assume someone took advantage of the crowds and my turned back and took it. It was really my fault for having put it down. But, oh well. At least now I am much more aware and now my sight never leaves my belongings.”
